Hello, hello, and welcome to The Grant Business Show.
I'm your host, Rodney Walker, thrilled
that you're here with me.
We have a great episode for you today day that's
going to provide some information for you on why most
grant professionals don't earn the type of money they want.
I'm going to talk about three important reasons
why that doesn't happen, why they're not making
the type of money that they actually want.
And I'm also going to be sharing with you the
time when I wasn't making the type of money that
I wanted and what the cheap barrier was for that.
I'm going to share with you what I did wrong, and then
I'm going to share with you the pivots that I made.
Hopefully, some of those pivots may be
instructional for you and may be helpful.
Just the insight of someone else having experience,
maybe what you're going through could be helpful.
I want to share with you that when you're
doing a business, my friend, it's one of the
most challenging things that you probably will ever do.
And one thing that happens that a lot of
people discount is that school oftentimes train us just
to be workers just to do what we're told.
So if you are thinking about doing this as a
business and you're used to someone always telling you what
to do, and that's all that you can do, my
friend, you're going to have to step out of the
box and start taking some initiative and start doing some
things differently without being told what to do. Yes.
I'm saying you've got to become a grown up.
You got to become an adult.
You got to be 100% responsible
for you and your business.
Because if you're going to make a thriving
business, you're going to have to grow it.
You're going to have to get tough.
You're going to have to go through some challenges that
those who are not doing business don't have to worry
about because somebody is handing them a check.
But if you're thinking about doing a
business, you got to look at all
facets of your business, including the marketing,
including the branding, including your messaging.
You are the one that has
to be responsible for your website.
Yes, you need a website just
in case you don't have one.
You've got to be responsible for those things.
You got to be responsible for
the management, the marketing, the innovation.
All of those things fall in your lap.
And that's why this is not for some
people, because that's more than they really won't.
Let's say I just want to write a grant, Rodney.
There are a lot of places you can get a job.
In fact, if you'll go over to igrantwriters.com
you'll see a whole job listing where you
can look for jobs in your area.
And if that's you, I would encourage you.
That's a Noble living.
But some of you want more.
Some of you want to be the Head honcho
You want to be the boss.
And if you want to be the boss, there's
a cost that comes with being the boss. Yes.
I'm going to tell you straight like it
is, I'm not going to make this thing.
I'm not going to make it something that it's not.
And it requires for you to think.
So let me share with you those things that keep
people from earning as much as they actually want.
The first thing is that these entrepreneurs or would
be entrepreneurs that are doing a grant business.
Their want is more of a wish... are you writing this down? Okay?
I want you to write it down and keep
this in some Journal somewhere because it'll help you.
Trust me, it will help you.
Their want is more of a wish.
They're wishing that they had a successful business or
they are wishing that they would earn more.
Oh, it would be nice if I was earning this amount.
And so they don't have a clear game plan to
make that happen, which leads me to number two.
They do not have a clear
goal to achieve what they want.
If you don't have a goal, my friend, and an
action plan to back up that goal, you're wishing.
In fact, if you don't have
your goals written down, you're wishing.
And I want to wish you well
and that you'll turn things around.
And I want you to focus on working on one goal.
What is the goal for your business?
If you say, "Hey Rodney, in the next two months,
I want to get at least two clients or three
clients" that's a solid goal that you can go after.
We want to think about goals.
If your goal is simply in your mind, meaning
that it's in your head, it's a wish.
It's floating around with billions of other thoughts.
And we want to crystallize what it is that you
want to do and write it down on paper.
The third thing that keeps most grant professionals from
earning the type of money that they want.
They've not made a decision.
They've not made a decision to earn what they want.
So what happens?
They earn what they get.
And if you want to earn
more, you've got to become more.
You've got to give more.
You've got to serve more.
You've got to help more.
And if you can help these nonprofit organizations and
these government organizations to get more of what they
want, my friend, you will get more of what
you want, but you've got to become Crystal clear
on what it is that you want.
And that's why I'm going to encourage you not
to make the mistake that so many professionals make.
You know what they do?
They go at it on their own
or they join an organization and they
don't really participate in that organization.
So literally, they're still going at it alone.
And I want to encourage you not to do that.
There are so many different ways
that you can not do that.
One way is by considering hanging out with me
